During steel production it’s necessary to test the molten steel for the accurate mix of alloys but the temperatures inside an electric arc furnace can rise as high as 3200 ° F, requiring special equipment to accomplish the task.
This artwork depicts a highly trained steel worker reaching into the furnace with a coring probe specifically designed for drawing out a sample of molten steel from the core of the furnace. Smoke and heat emanate from the ferrous material, which has been melted by an arc from electrodes inside the furnace. A foreman observes from the side.
