“Tending the Beast”

50 x 70"
Charcoal / pastel on canvas
1992
In the collection of Brinkman International Group, Inc., Rochester, NY

A visit to a local manufacturing facility was the source of inspiration for this piece. The machinists in this department work on older style screw machines, which are fully automatic but non-computerized. Once the machines are set up they can continue producing, with consistent accuracy, high-volume, quality, turned components with minimal human intervention.

This piece depicts the intense efforts of the workers as heroic, using care and precision in order to produce parts, which fulfill the needs of both local and global commerce.
