What I Do

At the beginning of my career, I was  challenged to interpret, through art, the actions inside a machine shop. From that moment forward, work environments have been a continued source of inspiration. Among the equipment and the hard-hat environments, exists an exciting world of proud craftswomen and craftsmen, eager to share their expertise. While toiling under sometimes difficult or dangerous conditions, the end result of their hard work is society’s uninterrupted ease of existence. Gaining the respect and sharing the humor of skilled technicians who are eager to explain their role is my reward. It’s an honor to be in the midst of these hidden heroes; I’m proud to “sing their song”.

The silent language found in choreography uses personalized symbolism to discuss private ideas and philosophies. This method of expression is applied within the personal myth series, which includes the House Painting series, Checkerboard Floor series, and others. The most important aspect of this group is the interpretation the viewing audience brings to the paintings. As a coat hanger to a coat: The structure is reliably consistent regardless of the size or style of the coat, or who wears it; the coat hanger still performs its task. As such, we bring our own experiences with us to view art and our personal interpretation is as valuable as the meaning instilled by the artist. It is to the artist’s benefit not to bend the arm of the viewer, but instead to allow the audience the freedom to decide for themselves what meaning the art conjures. This invaluable experience can sometimes bring more excitement to art than the artist’s original intention. And that’s so much more interesting than continually trying to explain the punch line.
